An anaesthetist is a doctor with 7 years specialist training after qualifying. An anaesthetist works only in the field of anaesthetics.

Your anaesthetist will be present for the duration of your operation. They will be aware of every breath you breathe and every beat of your heart. During the operation they sit next to your head and monitor all your physiological changes. The motto of this year's National Anaesthetics Day was 'someone to watch over you'.
