Mr John Watkinson qualified at the Royal Free Hospital in London, and trained in Head and Neck Surgery at Guys and the Royal Marsden. He has a Master of Science degree in Nuclear Medicine, a Master of Surgery degree (both from the University of London) and hold fellowships in both general surgery and otolaryngology.
He was appointed Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1992, and two years later was appointed to the Thyroid Clinic. In 2002, he received a B award.
He also scooped the Hospital Doctor of the Year Award (Surgery Section) 1998-99; George Davey Howells Prize London University for Stell & Marans Head and Neck Surgery 2000.
Mr Watkinson now has one of the biggest Thyroid practices in the UK and works in the joint multidisciplinary thyroid clinic at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust with Professors Michael Sheppard and Jayne Franklyn. He’s published widely in the field of Head & Neck & Thyroid Surgery, has been involved in a number of guidelines, promotes multidisciplinary working and performs approximately 200 Thyroidectomies a year.
